Buffalo Wings

PDF Print E-mail

If there is one thing you can count on when you go online, it's that you are going to find information  not true wich is simply presented as a fact. People don't really care or they don't want to admit that they aren't sure.

I once read this type of article (presented as fact): it was about Buffalo wings, and yet, there was nothing factual in the information. I was appalled that someone might read it and take it as the truth. Now granted, the origins of Buffalo wings isn't something that will make or break your life, but it was a good example of people presenting information as truth without really doing their homework.

I know about Buffalo wings because I live near Buffalo, NY. Otherwise, I probably wouldn't have a clue as to how they were created.

I do know they started at a bar in Buffalo called the Anchor Bar, and they were made up on the fly for a late night customer. The owners threw together some hot sauce and threw it on deep fried chicken wings. I'm not sure if blue cheese was coupled with it right away, but it soon became the perfect sauce to go with them.

They were named Buffalo wings because of their city of origin, and they had nothing to do with real buffalos.

If you were to read this article about Buffalo wings, however, you would hear a totally different tale. The author presented some historical account of America from back when it was first being explored. Someone had described buffalos as an animal with tiny wings. They went on to say that the Buffalo wings we have today began with these real buffalo wings, and then when they ran out, they had to use chicken wings. The story also says this happened the city of Bison, and then someone from New York City tried them and took the idea home and the current love of Buffalo wings began.

The story is entirely false of course, and there were never Buffalo wings made from, well, real buffalo wings. Though I can't vouch for the authenticity of the document the person used as a reference, it's a shaky reference at that, and has nothing to do with Buffalo wings today. They are called such because of the city, not because of the animal.

Perhaps that article was supposed to be parody of some sort, I'm not really sure, but if it was they need to work on their writing skills, because to me, it looks like a serious article full of misinformation.

The Internet, sadly, is full of articles just like that one.
