Rising German star Martin Kaymer seized the half-way lead at the BMW International Open in Munich with a magnificent nine-under-par round of 63...
Ryder Cup hopeful Kaymer had nine birdies on his card as he finished with a 13-under total of 131. "I'm hitting the ball really long this week. I don't know why and it was a little scary to be honest," he said. His round left him five shots clear of England's Benn Barham (68) and France's Francois Delamontagne (66). "To play in your own country with all of the support is awesome," Kaymer added. His performance drew fulsome praise from playing partner Bernhard Langer, Germany's greatest ever golfer, who himself carded a 72 to finish on two-under. "It's great to see we have some youngsters who can hopefully take on the torch for golf in Germany in the future. "I told him 'you're very aggressive, but you're smart at the same time like Tiger Woods or Phil Mickelson'. He's got an old head on young shoulders. Going by the last two days I don't think there any limits for him if he keeps that up," said Langer. Kaymer's round was just one short of the course record, but while the German had a fine day some high profile names failed to make the halfway cut. Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell missed out by a single shot after going into the water both with his pitch to the 16th for a double bogey and then with his drive down the last. Order of Merit leader Miguel Angel Jimenez also crashed out on level par, but his Ryder Cup spot looks pretty secure with John Daly also exiting on the same mark. Meanwhile, Englishman Richard Finch is shot behind Barham and Delamontagne on seven under thanks to a round that included seven birdies. Paul Casey, David Howell, Retief Goosen and Bradley Dredge are among those one further back, but Colin Montgomerie is down on three under and in danger of being an also-ran yet again. |
